/ CASE STUDY — CELIUM BV

Rescued a broken prototype.
Delivered a working system across 4 milestones.

Celium BV had the vision, the hardware, and the team. What they didn't have was a working board. DBtronics diagnosed each fault from first principles and rebuilt the system piece by piece until every component worked.

THE CLIENT

Who Is Celium BV?

Celium BV is a Netherlands-based food technology startup building automated systems for mushroom cultivation. Their product combines custom hardware, embedded software and a user interface to monitor and control the growth environment — temperature, humidity, imaging and more. By early 2024 they had a custom ESP32-S3 board in hand and a clear product vision in Figma. The problem: almost none of it worked.

THE CHALLENGE

Four Things That Weren't Working

The board had been designed and fabricated, but across every major subsystem something was broken. The previous developer had dropped off without resolution.

01

Camera completely non-functional

Blank output regardless of configuration — no image ever reached the microcontroller.

02

No SD card image recording

Storage integration was never built, so nothing could be captured or retained.

03

Dark LCD, dead touchscreen

The display had been dark for weeks and the touchscreen was completely unresponsive.

04

Figma designs never reached the device

A finished UI vision existed on screen, but nothing had been implemented on hardware.

THE APPROACH

Diagnose First. Build Second.

Before writing a single line of code, the custom PCB was loaded into Altium Designer and analysed pin-by-pin. The analysis revealed that all camera signal pins had been assigned in reverse order relative to the manufacturer's specification — a fundamental hardware design error no firmware change could have fixed. That pattern — trace the problem to its actual source before attempting a fix — defined all four milestones.

01

High-resolution imaging without external RAM

Pin alignment corrected against the manufacturer specification, and capture validated on both standard and custom boards — high-resolution imaging achieved without external PSRAM.

02

SD card image recording

SPI validated against the custom pinouts, with captures written to the card on a button trigger.

03

LCD brought to life

The correct ILI9340 driver identified by reading the display's internal registers directly from hardware.

04

Touchscreen and full UI on device

The touchscreen driver recovered from the previous developer's git history, and the complete Figma UI running on device with animated transitions.

THE RESULTS

From Non-Functional to Fully Operational

Before DBtronics: blank camera output, no SD integration, a dark LCD, an unresponsive touchscreen and a UI stuck in Figma. After: every subsystem working, on hardware.

What the client said

"Dian went beyond what we expected and helped with figuring out long-lasting issues we had. I appreciate working with him and look forward to future projects.
